Consumers look for pre-loved, long-lasting clothes that are one of a kind and inexpensive. A thrift store is essentially a place that sells clothing that was once worn or used by someone else, and also includes shoes, accessories, books, etc. Another report by global thrift retailer <a href="https://www.thredup.com/resale/#size-and-impact">ThredUp</a> notes second-hand apparel is becoming a global phenomenon and is expected to grow 127% by 2026, with Asian countries witnessing a 3-fold growth. While sustainability is a factor too, I do think that affordability plays a role and in some cases, how unique the items are, plays a much more significant role,” said Balasubramanium. A recent report by Kantar India also highlighted how India is accepting a sustainable lifestyle but consumers want options that don’t burn a hole in their pockets. It said, “The cost-of-living crisis reminds us that green products need to be affordable for sustainability to become mainstream. Brands that offer sustainable options that are affordable will be favoured.” A point that is borne out by Delhi-based Esmita Mondal, a loyal shopper of thrifted clothes, who found it easier to buy second-hand clothes and share it with her two siblings. “The issue with buying clothes from outlets like Zara or fast fashion is that, first of all, the clothes are for a specific time period and when the trend is out, people don't like to wear it. I think their main concern was that clothes would be unhygienic and … that it's not good for their status. Now, because they know that the Western culture also believes in thrift stores, Indians know it's a trend and people are okay with it,” D’cruz said. In the US, the second-hand market is expected to <a href="https://www.thredup.com/resale/#size-and-impact">more than double</a> by 2026, reaching $82 million. A typical thrift store collects pre-loved clothes, curates them after fixing them for its future owners – which could mean fixing any defects, dry-cleaning and sanitizing them. Items are priced as per their brand value, condition, and vintage pieces are priced the highest. Stocking items that are inclusive in sizes, gender and prices are making thrift shops extremely attractive to the socially and environmentally conscious consumers. Future of thrifting in India The next wave of thrifting in India will be driven by brands and retailers. Alia Bhatt’s kids clothing start-up Ed-a-Mamma, is one of the early players in the segment that encourages parents to resell after using their clothes through its online platforms. It intends to explore thrifting in a big way in the near future. “I'm sure that the minute we open our own exclusive stores, we would also be promoting thrifting in a big way. I'm sure going forward, more and more people will start warming up to it and it will trickle down to all the major brands who believe in sustainability,” Iffat Jivan, head of business at Ed-a-Mamma told Business Insider India. Rebranding second-hand clothes as ‘pre-loved’ and ‘thrifted’ clothes could also help in removing the stigma around these clothes among Indians, and make them fashionable and desirable, industry players say. Aleena Shibu, founder and owner of Thrift India, believes that awareness is growing and consumers now come to shop for party looks too. “Recently, we have been getting a lot of requests from people who have special events and they prefer to get things from a thrift store as opposed to getting a brand new piece. So, people are more conscious than they were before but there definitely needs to be a lot more awareness regarding this,” said Shibu. Thrifting offers a unique solution to controlling clothing waste by making closets greener and circular. That would be interpreted by the market positively indicating that the RBI is not behind the curve," according to V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services. The real concern for the market, going forward, would be the aggressive rate hikes and quantitative tightening by the Fed expected in the coming 12 months, he added. "Crude softening to around $100 is positive while FIIs again turning sellers will provide ammunition to the bears," Vijayakumar, said. One of India's top virologists, Gagandeep Kang, said on Thursday that going by what we know about the 'XE' variant of Covid-19 till now, it doesn't seem there is too much cause to worry. The variant spreads a little faster, but it doesn't seem to cause a more severe disease, she told IANS. "We are more worried about severe diseases, and if that's not happening, I think we should track it, but not worry too much about it," Kang said on the reported detection of the 'XE' variant in Mumbai. However, the INSACOG has denied the detection of XE variant, saying that this variant does not correlate with the genomic picture of the 'XE' variant. INSACOG is the forum set up under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to study and monitor genome sequencing and virus variation of circulating strains of Covid-19 in India. Speaking to IANS, Kang said that it is for the INSACOG to say whether it is really XE, but we shouldn't be worried about it as sooner or later we are likely to see the XE variant in the country. She emphasised that whenever we see a new variant, the important thing is to note what implications it has for the country -- is it going to start a new wave, are people going to fall seriously sick etc. Talking about reports claiming that the XE variant has 10 per cent more transmissibility as compared to Omicron, Kang said that these are findings from the UK, because they do a lot of sequencing. "For them, it is possible to look at the secondary attack rate, i.e., if one person is infected, how many persons will get infected from that primary source and also how fast will that happen. Only in the UK, finding such data is possible, but in India we don't even notice," she said. Commenting on a Covid booster dose for all in India, Kang said that there is no need for booster for all. "Recently, sero-survey has indicated that about 80 per cent of children who have not been vaccinated are sero positive. It means that 80 per cent of the population has exposure to the virus. If 80 per cent has already been infected or exposed to the virus, along with two doses of vaccine, why should booster be given to those people who are generally healthy? "Administering a precautionary doses to those who are at the risk of severe diseases makes sense, but not for a healthy population." Eminent virologist says no need to worry about the 'XE' variant of Omicron

Germany has shut down the Russian illegal darknet marketplace called 'Hydra Market', confiscating 543 Bitcoins with a total value of around $25.2 million. The authorities shut down the server infrastructure for Hydra which is a huge marketplace on Dark Web for drugs, stolen credit card information and other illegal goods. "Among other things, there is a suspicion of the commercial operation of criminal trading platforms on the Internet, the commercial procurement or granting of an opportunity for the unauthorised purchase or the unauthorised sale of narcotics as well as commercial money laundering," said Germany's Central Office for Combating Cybercrime (ZIT) and Federal Crime Police Office (BKA). The illegal marketplace had been accessible via the Tor network since at least 2015. "Their focus was on trading in illegal narcotics. In addition, data spied out worldwide, forged documents and digital services were offered profitably via the platform," the BKA said in a statement late on Tuesday. Around 17 million customers and over 19,000 seller accounts were registered on the marketplace. According to ZIT and BKA estimates, "Hydra Market" was probably the illegal marketplace with the highest turnover worldwide." "In particular, the Bitcoin Bank Mixer, a service for obfuscating digital transactions provided by the platform, made crypto investigations extremely difficult for law enforcement agencies," said the German authorities. Cryptocurrency investigation firm Chainanalysis recently found $200 million in stolen cryptocurrency on the platform in 2021 and early 2022. The country ranked ahead of Brazil and Hong Kong, each of which had 51% of respondents saying they were first-time investors over the past year. Ireland led among the crypto-curious with 58% saying they are interested in learning more about crypto or purchasing crypto in the coming year,” the report said. Perhaps an even more interesting nugget is that 47% of the respondents who planned to buy crypto for the first time in the next year were women. And amongst these respondents, “at least half” of the women were from developing nations like Israel, Indonesia, and Nigeria. “Conversely, in developed countries and regions, only a third of current crypto owners are women, including in the United States (32%), Europe (33%), and Australia (27%), said the report. Additionally, the report noted that users are more likely to seek education about cryptocurrencies now. 40% of the respondents globally said that more educational resources on cryptocurrency would help them get started in the industry; a stark difference from yesteryears when users were investing in crypto based on recommendations from friends. Only 22% of the respondents said they would take advice from friends for investing in crypto.
